Sunday School for Children & Teens

PreK - Grade 3 Class

Teacher: Sister Jada Byron

There are three units concentrating on the value of Friendliness. We will talk about how Jesus’ friends help others. We will encourage our students to work together and to tell their friends about Jesus. We will concentrate on the fact that God’s message is for everyone to “Serve one another in love.”

Grades 4-5 Class

Teacher: Sister Margarett Shipley

The class focuses on stories from the Bible using the Bible in Life series by David C. Cook.  The lessons include Bible study and related activities.  Memory verses from the Bible, games and puzzles are a part of the lessons and used when appropriate to support the lesson theme.  In addition, worship songs that correlate with the unit themes are provided on CD’s.  A separate pictorial booklet, the`Pix, can be sent home with the student for lesson reinforcement.

Youth 1 Class

This class, for middle and high school students, assists our youth in learning about Jesus Christ, to develop personal relationships to include further independent Bible study and the importance of daily prayer and communion. Youth will learn life lessons to help them to excel in school, relationships, service, and leadership and explore their spiritual gifts.

Sunday School for Adults

The Adult Journeys

Convener: Sister Sheila Abrams-Jones

Teacher: Sister Shirl Byron 

Focus: This is a fellowship of bible study that rests on Psalm 25: 4 and 5 (NLT) “Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.” We are on a journey of becoming in the Word. Our class members assist each other in our study of the Word and from shared testimony.  We use the Judson Bible Journeys for Adults study curricula.  Each quarter we begin a new study topic. Our class is open to men and women of all ages and levels of Christian experiences.

Bible Study For Today's Living

Teacher: Deacon Thomasine Baskerville

 

Focus: It is opened to Adults who wish to attend. We have had participants as young as 16 and as old as almost 90. We study books of the Bible in depth or topical issues in which we search for Biblical references, solutions and directions. The class is small and allows for participants to ask questions and share their experiences and concerns with those in attendance. We always welcome anyone
who wishes to become part of the experience.

Ladies Bible Class

Convener: Deacon Myrtha Allen

Teachers: Sister Stacy Rodgers Eley, Sister Odell Reaves, Deacon Myrtha Allen, & Sister Jacqueline Thomas

Focus: The class welcomes women of all ages. Our current study is focused on God’s love for us. The lessons are divided into four steps. Life Connection prepares the ladies to discover why this is important to them. Bible Exploration prepares the ladies to grow in their understanding of their discipleship journey. Bible interaction contains a variety of activities related to their involvement in the Bible’s teaching. Then, Life Response encourages students to respond to God, based on the day’s lesson.

Getting to Know Your Bible Class

Teachers: Deacon William "Bill" Davis & Sister Brendella Hawkins 

Focus: Our study includes a chapter by chapter approach through the use of reading and discussion. Questions are provided to guide reading and discussion. Our prayer is that leaders and class members will leave each class with new insights into God’s Word and its application for their lives.

Intergenerational Class

Teacher: Sister Patelle Harris

Focus: This class has been designed to provide an on-going opportunity to survey the Books of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Teacher developed lessons are used, and participants are given study guides. Class interaction is strongly encouraged. The overarching goal is to become spiritually transformed as we grow closer to God in an understanding of His Word.

The In-Betweens Class

Convener: Dr. Maxine Wood

Teacher: Sister Elizabeth Craig

Focus: Founded in the early 1970’s by Mrs. Vernice Matthews, a recognized educator and a long time committed Sunday School leader of Providence, the “In-Betweens” class has continued to be offered, without interruption for more than 45 years. The class is open to men and women of all ages and provides ongoing Bible study to investigate the topics, personalities, events and books of the Bible as selected by the class members.  Such studies may focus on specific books of the Bible (ex. Acts, Hebrews, Psalms) or varied topics that are pursued through Bible study.

Genesis-The Beginning Class

Convener: Sister Barbara Evans 

Teachers: Brother James Roberts & Sister Zelda McCormick 

Focus: This class is open to first time Bible students and anyone who would like to increase their knowledge of the Word of God. Our aim is to make everyone comfortable in learning Gods Word and applying it to their lives.  This is accomplished by studying
selected books of the Bible and encouraging our students to question and give their input to make the study more meaningful.

Open Bible Class

Convener: Brother Andrew Reid

Teachers: Deacon Tyree Gregory, Brother Denzlow Evans, Minister Roosevelt Key, and Sister Estella Cage

 

Focus: The Open Bible Class is open to all interested persons.  The class is committed to building a caring community among its members and a hospitable environment.  The class curriculum of study alternates between studying Scripture from the Old
and New Testament, which involves exploring life issues from a faith perspective. Each lesson Scripture is used to prompt the student to think deeply about the spiritual content relating to the Christian faith and how to apply it.  Mission activities in service to others are also discussed.
